Our spontaneous European road trip was exactly that: spontaneous, slightly chaotic, but wildly rewarding. Starting in the UK, we embarked on an unforgettable journey through France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and back through Luxembourg.

Faithful Companion and Mile-Muncher
After 8-years of ownership the time had finally come for my M2 to leave England and head back home to Europe. Despite a boot full and a roof tent, the M2 proved exciting and engaging for over 4000km of driving across autobahn, hairpins and mountain passes.
Here’s our story:
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Famous Canals, Museums, and Dutch Culture
Our first stop was vibrant Amsterdam, where culture and charm meet. After a smooth ferry and drive, we arrived in this city of canals, bicycles, and iconic architecture. Highlights included visiting the world-renowned Rijksmuseum, paying homage at the Anne Frank House, and exploring the trendy Jordaan District.
We embraced local life with a relaxing canal cruise and tasted authentic Dutch apple pie in cozy brown cafes. Amsterdam's blend of history and modern flair made it the perfect way to ease into our European adventure.
Boppard, Germany
Quaint Village Along the Romantic Rhine
Next up was Boppard, a fairytale village nestled in the scenic Rhine Valley. Unknown for its charming half-timbered houses and serene river views, Boppard was a refreshing escape.
We didn’t know what to expect, this was a quick (cheap) place to crash and break up a long journey through Germany. However, cobblestone streets, panoramic views of the Rhine, and sampling the local Riesling wine with tea whilst watching boats sail by was idyllic. This hidden gem was the epitome of German hospitality and tranquility.
Titisee, Germany
Hiking and Nature in the Black Forest
Our journey continued to Titisee, a picturesque lake town in the Black Forest. Surrounded by dense pine forests, the crystal-clear lake offered peaceful hiking trails and lakeside relaxation. We spent our afternoon hiking around Lake Titisee, embracing the fresh alpine air and natural beauty.
Titisee was a gentle reminder to slow down and savour the moment. It set the tone for the rest of the adventure.
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
The Adventure Capital of the Alps
Arriving in Lauterbrunnen felt like stepping into a postcard. This stunning valley, framed by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls, is a dream destination for outdoor lovers. I rented a mountain bike and tore down valley trails for a day, not encountering another soul the whole day.
Oeschinensee was on the doorstep, so it made sense to pack up camp for a day-trip there. It lives up to every expectation; it is easily the prettiest lake in the world.
Lugano, Switzerland
Where Alp Meets Med
After days of high-altitude adventures, Lugano offered a delightful contrast, although it wasn’t planned. With its palm-lined promenades and Italian flair, Lugano felt like a Mediterranean getaway.
Venice, Italy
Iconic Sightseeing and Timeless Romance
I couldn't resist adding Venice to our ultimate road trip itinerary. Having never been before it was somewhere that felt appropriate and required almost no detour.
After camping on the mainland at Fusina, we took a vaporetto into the labyrinth of canals. From the grandeur of St. Mark's Basilica and the Rialto Bridge to hidden alleyways and local cicchetti bars, Venice was mesmerising.
The city's timeless beauty made it a must-see.
Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy
Hiking in the Heart of the Dolomites
Next, we headed to Cortina D’Ampezzo, the gateway to the Dolomites. Our first hike to Lago di Sorapis revealed stunning turquoise waters encircled by jagged peaks, one which took ‘adventure’ too literally.
We followed it with a visit to Lago di Carezza, another gem with emerald reflections. Evenings were spent indulging in hearty Italian mountain cuisine and reliving the day's adventures.
This was rounded off with an en-route stop off to have our minds blown by Tre Cime, whilst heading to the next camp site.
Ortisei, Italy
Seceda and Alpe di Siusi Hiking Paradise
Our journey continued to quiet Sarnonico before reaching alpine paradise in Ortisei. This charming village became our base for a couple of unforgettable hikes.
At Seceda, sharp peaks pierced the sky, offering cinematic views.
Meanwhile, Alpe di Siusi enchanted us with gentle meadows, wildflowers, and panoramic mountain backdrops. This was the Dolomites at their most magical.
Munich, Germany
BMW Museum and Bavarian Beerhalls
It was fitting to visit Munich, taking my BMW M2 back home and visiting the fascinating BMW Museum to admire classic cars and futuristic designs.
Then we dove headfirst into Bavarian tradition at a lively beerhall. Giant pretzels, hearty meals, and litres of beer toasted alongside locals and travellers made for the perfect end to our epic European road trip.
Moestroff, Luxembourg
Regroup and Rechage for the Final Leg.
Our final stop was in Luxembourg, although a short stop on an otherwise very lengthy trip, this was a great place to visit, unwind and reflect on what had truly been the trip of a lifetime.
Spending a night here bagged another flag, one we were not expecting to manage on this trip. For sure, Luxembourg is another place to revisit.
Roadtrip Essentials
During this 4-week adventure through the heart of the Alps we couldn’t have coped without these three must-haves:
- Power Bank - This Energizer was ample for charging laptops, mobiles and even the cool box. And earns it the #1 spot.
- Flextail - the ultimate mozzy repeller. Oh how we wished this had been around to save us on the NC500 trip.
- Jetboil - No wonder they’re so popular, we can’t believe the decadence of a cafetière coffee on a cold morning at camp.

The Alps is a love story. I had no real understanding on what to expect but it was an eye-opener. It has everything I enjoy - biking, hiking, and a vastness that cannot be described. Learnt a lot about what I want from life and that’s carried through into all of the other adventures.
